Magnelis: What, Where, Why?

When you’re starting a new project, it can be difficult to find a material that is suitable for the application and has all the properties your project requires.

At ASD, we offer a wide range of steel materials, but we are always expanding our portfolio so that we can continue to meet our customers’ changing needs. For instance, Magnelis – an alloy of zinc, aluminium and magnesium – is similar in appearance to galvanised steel, but it has many more benefits.

We recently talked to our OCS – Organically Coated Steels team at Kidderminster to learn all about Magnelis. Read on to find out more…

What is Magnelis?

Magnelis is a metallic, steel-coated product made from an alloy of zinc with 3.5% aluminium and 3% magnesium. It is highly resistant to corrosion – up to 3x more resistant than galvanised steel – so it can withstand some of the harshest environments.

What’s more, you can fold, bend and form Magnelis into different shapes without it losing its uniform quality of finish.

And you can get this reliable product sent straight out to you from cutting – no more waiting for a coating to be applied, like you used to have to do with other products. Using Magnelis means a quicker turnaround time.

Where is Magnelis Used?

Because of its amazing properties, Magnelis has any number of different uses, across multiple industries and sectors, including:

  • Rainwater systems
  • Heating and ventilation
  • Agricultural buildings
  • Safety barriers
  • Industrial or garage doors
  • Electrical enclosures
  • Switchgear and instrumentation
  • Marine
  • Personal security or door security
  • Solar reflectivity
  • Washing systems
  • Outdoor furniture.

Because a key benefit of Magnelis is its superior corrosion resistance, it is particularly suitable for C5 class rated environments, this is where materials are highly susceptible to corrosion and require special protection to prevent corrosion.

Its relatively lower cost came into play on the Crossrail project, too, where it was used as a replacement for much-more-expensive stainless steel, not only performing superbly but also saving the project lots of money.

Why Choose Magnelis?

There are many benefits to choosing Magnelis for your next application, including, but not limited to:

  • It is highly resistant to corrosion – and to ammonia and chloride.
  • It is an effective alternative to stainless steel – and a good deal cheaper.
  • It self-repairs and protects its cut edges.
  • It is RoHS* compliant, i.e., lead and mercury free.
  • It is environmentally friendly, comprising less zinc than galvanised steel.
  • It performs well in its natural state – meaning turnaround times are quicker than with galvanised steel.
  • It can be powder coated.

* Restriction of Hazardous Substances.
