Part II: Nuclear Safety – CFSI Management

Welcome to part two of the series on nuclear where today we will be exploring counterfeit, fraudulent and suspect items, known as CFSI.

Let’s explore what CFSI Management means and how we check for it at ASD.

WHAT IS CFSI MANAGEMENT?

CFSI metals are those that are being labelled illegally and represented as original goods. CFSI protection forms part of Nuclear Safety and is a big responsibility which we all take seriously! Consequences of CFSI metals in the nuclear sector could pose a risk to public health and the wider environment.

SO HOW DO WE MANAGE CFSI AT ASD?

In order to ensure that our materials pass the CFSI check, we take certain measures at ASD. This helps us maintain quality and provide our customers with trustworthy metals. Here are the various steps we take:

  • We buy only from reputable and established mills and distributors.
  • We audit our supply chain and seek notification about a significant business change, such as a change of ownership.
  • We batch check our incoming stainless steels using XRF technology to correctly identify metals on arrival at our business.
  • We encourage our customers to use our UKAS approved ‘positive material identification’ (PMI) service for their quality level 1 carbon steel requirements.
  • We do not remove the purchaser’s name from a test certificate, as this will ensure that the end user can always trace the goods back to the mill’s customer. This is important: in the event of a failure or CFSI breach, the mill will often decline to talk to anyone other than the purchaser of the metals.
  • We are members of both the Nuclear Industry Association and Sellafield’s community of practice quality forum groups, sharing best practice in all aspects of nuclear safety, including CFSI.

If you want to know more about CFSI please ask us as we can offer free CPD workshops on this subject matter. CFSI is an extremely important aspect of nuclear safety.
