COR-TEN®: High-Strength, Self-Protecting Structural Steel

WHY CHOOSE COR-TEN®: BENEFITS AND COST SAVINGS

Cor-ten®, also known as Weathering Steel, is a high-strength, low-alloy, weldable structural steel possessing excellent weathering resistance. What makes it unique is its ability to protect itself: when exposed to the atmosphere, it forms a stable, rust-like appearance - a protective oxide coating that shields the steel from further corrosion. This natural “weathering” process not only improves the steel’s durability but also gives it a distinctive, attractive dark brown finish.

What’s more, if the coating is ever chipped or damaged, the material self-repairs, ensuring continuous protection and appearance.

Weathering Steel is particularly valuable in applications where high strength is needed but maintenance is difficult or costly. With mechanical properties similar to conventional steels, it allows for lighter, more efficient designs using well-established practices, but with the added benefit of its superior weather resistance.

Key Advantages:

  • Self-repairing corrosion protection - Develops a protective oxide layer that slows corrosion
  • Cost savings - Eliminates the need for initial painting and the ongoing cost of repainting
  • Increased durability - Even when painted areas are damaged, the exposed steel quickly forms a protective layer, reducing under-paint corrosion ‘creep’

Thickness Available:

  • 8mm – 40mm
  • 0mm – 40mm (dual certified to S355J2W & Cor-ten®)
