Westok Cellular Beam In situ

ASD Westok offers a free technical advisory service, employing a team of chartered engineers who are passionate about providing sustainable design guidance using lean design principles.

Structural engineers and steelwork contractors have an important role to play in mitigating the impact our projects might have on the environment. Westok’s ribbon-cut cellular beam is the lightest weight, lowest embodied carbon cellular beam in the market, offering weight and carbon savings against alternative systems. Engineers specify our cellular beam on their projects to take advantage of the significant weight and carbon savings generated.

Westok’s pocket guide is an invaluable source of guidance on many aspects of our cellular and plated beams. See below to download the guide.

Westok Grid Study Work

We have undertaken a large body of work to demonstrate the weight and carbon savings generated by the Westok ribbon-cut cellular beam.

Our grid study work compares Westok cellular beams, plate girders and UBs across a variety of secondary and primary beam grids ranging from 9m to 18m. Our work has demonstrated that the Westok cellular beam outperforms plate beams and UBs in every instance.

12m & 15m grid – Weight Saving Deep Dive

Consider a 12m and 15m secondary beam with a standard 400mm diameter cell, on a 7.5m grid using a 140mm metal deck slab spanning 3.75m between secondary beams. On the 12m grid, the Westok is 19% lighter than the plate beam, and 27% lighter than the UB. On the 15m grid, the Westok is 15% lighter and 14% lighter.

Embodied carbon savings

By taking account of the metal deck slab, columns, connections and bracing, a more detailed review of the embodied carbon of the grid can be calculated. It follows that the weight savings generated by the Westok cellular beam, generates significant embodied carbon savings also.
